CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KFVS) -

Authorities say two young children playing with matches and a lighter caused a fire that damaged an apartment complex in Caruthersville Sunday afternoon.

According to Caruthersville Fire Chief Charles Jones, they received the call around 12:45 p.m. to fire reports at an apartment complex at 309 Highland Avenue.

Jones says there is heat, smoke and water damage to 10 total apartments and the fire was contained to apartments #2 and #3.

He says it appears the fire started in apartment #3 in a 13-unit apartment complex. Twelve of those units were rented.

Jones says a woman was taking a bath when her 3 and 4-year-old children ran into the bathroom screaming that the bedroom was on fire.

Authorities believe the children were playing with matches and lighters and sparked the fire.

Kennett and Hayti Fire Crews responded to help Caruthersville with the blaze.

Jones says the fire department and Missouri State Fire Marshal's office out of Jackson, Missouri investigated the fire.

All the families in the apartments got out safely. No serious injuries were reported.

The American Red Cross assisted 36 adults and children.
