Spurrier already throwing barbs at Clemson

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

South Carolina (6-0, 4-0 SEC) head football coach Steve Spurrier isn't waiting until Thanksgiving weekend to throw a few barbs to the Upstate and the Clemson football team.

During his weekly news conference, Spurrier took a few moments out of his regularly scheduled comments about Saturday's LSU game to fan the flames of the South Carolina/Clemson rivalry.

"Most of our guys have never been to Death Valley," said Spurrier, talking about the LSU stadium. "That is the Death Valley, isn't it? Or is there another one? There's two of them. That's right there's two Death Valleys. Was LSU the first one or the second one? They were first? Oh, okay."

The Clemson football stadium, Memorial Stadium, is nicknamed "Death Valley" just like LSU's Tiger Stadium.

Clemson Memorial Stadium, according to the university's website, was given the name "Death Valley" because former Presbyterian Coach Lonnie McMillian compared the stadium to the California town.

Meanwhile, the LSU Tigers say their "Death Valley" is a play on the word "deaf", a testament to the high level of noise at the stadium during games.

Interestingly enough, Spurrier and the Gamecocks will be playing in both Death Valley stadiums this year.

The No. 3 Gamecocks kick off against the No. 9 LSU Tigers this Saturday at 8 p.m.
