BLACK ROCK, AR (KAIT) – Drivers have likely noticed a lot of construction recently beside the Black River bridge at Black Rock. Walter McMillan, the Arkansas Highway & Transportation Department's district
Some local drivers have feared that a bridge collapse like the one in Washington State this week could happen closer to home. People have been particularly fearful of the aging Black River Bridge that connects Black Rock and Portia on U.S. 63 in Lawrence County.
Thousands of bridges around the U.S. may be one freak accident or mistake away from collapse, even if the spans are deemed structurally sound.

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – A planter met its demise early Wednesday afternoon when a driver plowed his car into it.
According to the Arkansas State University Police Department, a man hit a very large plant pot sitting in front of the Nursing Center and Post Office on South Caraway Road around 12:45.
Officers couldn't release much information on the incident, but did say the driver was at a nearby hospital answering questions.
A student on the scene at the scene said the driver was alert after the crash and she tried to help him.
"I'm not a hero. I just saw the guy and wanted to help him, and when he took off, I knew he needed, for some reason, to be caught..." said ASU Senior Catherine Lee.
Region 8 News will keep in contact with ASUPD for more information on the driver. Keep checking back from more information on kait8.com or region8togo.com.
