Kyria Seymour of Jonesboro died Saturday, April 19, at LeBonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN. A memorial fund has been created for an 11-year-old girl who died after she became trapped beneath a pipe in a water-filled ditch for 20 minutes.

MARKED TREE, AR (KAIT) – The police chief of Marked Tree says he was fired for asking city council to hire a police officer.

According to Chester Ford, Marked Tree Mayor Wayne Nichols fired him after he said he went, "over his head," when asking city council to fill an open police officer slot.

Ford told Region 8 News that, "Nichols told me to come see him in his office the next morning. I showed up and he said I went over his head to the council, and said he just couldn't work with him."

Ford said the department had two officer openings, and he needed them filled as soon as possible.

Region 8 News made contact with Mayor Nichols who said the parting was a mutual agreement, but gave no other details.

Ford says he plans on being at the next city council and ask the council to be reinstated.

Ford had been the police chief of Marked Tree since 2007.

Region 8 News will continue to track this story and bring you any new details as soon as they become available.
