HAYTI, MO (KAIT) – After receiving a notice to vacate from the city of Caruthersville, the Caruthersville Humane Society (CHS) will now relocate to Hayti.
According to a spokesperson for the non-profit group, CHS only has a matter of weeks to pack up and move now that the city has rescinded their initial deadline for Dec. 9. They were served a notice to vacate Oct. 2.
CHS is currently operating out of the old Cupples factory, where they have been since the city had them relocate from their original shelter—a building the society raised the money to build and upkeep.
The group says the city ordered the group to stop taking in animals and forced the Society to close temporarily after they complained to city officials in March about animal neglect and abuse by a former city employee. They also said the city expressed its desire to terminate their 20-plus year relationship in an official letter.
The group will post a list of items they may need posted on their Facebook page as renovations begin
