CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

We've uncovered new developments in the case of convicted serial killer Anthony Sowell and another desperate attempt to save his life.

New court papers were just filed by an expert hired by the Defense for his trial.

Lori James-Townes now says the defense couldn't been more thorough and probably messed up calling some Sowell relatives to testify.

The papers were just filed as a part of an appeal.  Sowell sits on death row, convicted of killing 11 women.

Townes writes she needed more time to look into Sowell's past.  And she writes, "It became apparent most family members were so damaged that they should have testify or be limited.  Family witnesses probably did more harm than good."

Prosecutors get to respond and perhaps decades of appeals will follow.
