Southeast Missouri State Board of Regents Deep-Sixes "Indians"

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO - No more Indians nickname at Southeast Missouri State University.

The Board of Regents voted yesterday to drop the Indians nickname and mascot for the men's teams, and the Otahkians nickname for the women.

The women's team name is from the legend of a Cherokee woman named Otahki who died near Cape Girardeau on the Trail of Tears forced-march to the Oklahoma territory in the 1830s.

Supporters argued that the nicknames show pride in southeast Missouri's American Indian heritage.  Others found the names demeaning to Indians.

Southeast's teams will be known as the Redhawks beginning with next year's spring semester.  Work on a new Redhawk logo is underway.
