Weather radios prove vital during storms

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Secondary severe weather season is upon us.

Today, the Region 8 StormTeam programmed 138 weather radios at Barton's in Jonesboro. These weather radios broadcast NOAA warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Wanda Pate has been living in Cash for nearly 20 years, she says this spring was a mostly quiet one. "I brought my weather radio to be programmed. Yes, I heard that Wednesday, we might have some weather. "

She owns a storm shelter and hasn't used it in quite some time. "About 2 months ago, I think."

But she might need to soon because the wandering jet stream of early autumn can cause a slight up tick in tornadoes from October through November.

This jet stream is a pipeline of strong upper winds in excess of 100 miles per hour, separating cool Canadian air from the warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico.

A battleground of stormy weather lies along the front lines.

This jet stream is expected to return to Region 8 on Wednesday, ushering a slight risk of severe storms to the area.

Areas shaded in orange have a 30 percent chance of severe weather within a 25 mile radius.

That's why Lavonda Tollison wants to be ready. Tollison lives near a fire station, so she doesn't pay any mind to the frequent sirens. Instead, she'll have her weather radio close by. "If I heard the tornado warning, I wouldn't pay a bit of attention to it. It's going to help me. It's going to wake me up if it's at night."

Tollison says she feels safer now that her weather radio is programmed. She just wants to stay ahead of the storm. "I don't want to be in one. Let's put it that way."4
