ASU finishes runner-up at Lady Red Wolf Classic

From Arkansas State University

The Arkansas State women's golf team recorded a final-round 301 Tuesday at the Lady Red Wolf Classic, closing out its two-day home tournament at Sage Meadows Country Club as runner-up with a combined score of 888.

The Red Wolves were led by three players finishing among the top five individuals, including freshman Abi Laker, senior Jennifer Loiacano and junior Courtney Manning.  A-State collected its third runner-up finish in its first four tournaments played, also taking second place at the Drake Creek Invitational and Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational.

ASU began play at the tournament yesterday with a 298 and season-best 289 for the first and second rounds, respectively.  The Red Wolves 888 total is their lowest three-round score of the season, topping their previous low of 911 recorded at the Drake Creek Invitational.

"There is always a little extra pressure when you play your home tournament, and I was proud of the way we came out and performed in front of our fans," said ASU head coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw.  "I think our performance was highlighted by yesterday's second round.  Our girls rallied together and wanted to post a good score as a team and really got the job done."

ASU was led by Laker, who claimed third place to collect her third top-five finish of the season.  Laker posted a combined 217, including a second-round 69, to finish just four strokes behind medalist Malin Senneryd of UCA.

Loiacano and Manning ended the tournament tied for fifth place with a 222, the best finish of the season for both players.  Senior Anna Carling collected her third top-20 finish of the season, posting a 227 that was good enough for 10th place.  Freshman Endsley Evans had her best performance of the year, shooting a 238 to finish tied for 24th place.

Competing as individuals for A-State, Clara Tefteller finished tied for 27th place with a 238, Libby Croom tied for 36th with a 246, Alyssa Goodin tied for 39th with a 250 and Anna Flanrey 43rd with a 257.

Senneryd earned medalist honors and Julia Roth finished runner-up to lead UCA to the tournament championship with a combined team score of 872.

A-State wrapped up its fall season with the Lady Red Wolf Classic and will open the spring portion of its schedule Feb. 17-18 at Texas State's Jim West Challenge at Blanco, Texas.
