(WORLDNOW) – Whether you're an enthusiastic supporter of one of the presidential candidates this year, or just an American history buff who likes to entertain, Election Day is always a good excuse to stay up late with friends and family to watch the votes roll in.

This election year, try looking at the first Tuesday in November as what it truly is – the Super Bowl of politics! Here are some fun food and drink ideas to enjoy as you sit back and witness the spectacle of American history in action.

What's more fun than a traditional barbecue? Think of classic foods you'd serve at a Fourth of July celebration, from burgers and hot dogs to drinks with fun stars-and-stripes umbrellas for decoration. 

For dessert? Try decorating cakes or trifles with strawberries and blueberries in the shape of a flag or other patriotic patterns. If fresh berries are too pricey in your neck of the woods come autumn, you can always go with the all-time American standard: apple pie.


Fun with puns 

Nothing says "theme party" like foods with punny names. If you think this year's vote tallying is going be a long, drawn-out process, break out your favorite chili or stew recipe for a "Slow Cooker Election" meal in a bowl.

Feel like the vote count will be short and sweet?  Treat yourself to some "Landslide Mudslides." If you're wrong and the night stretches out a little longer than expected, add some strong coffee to those drinks for a shot of caffeine to help keep you awake through the poll-counting lulls.

And to get that harmonious, bipartisan vibe going, try your hand at a good old fashioned "American Melting Pot" filled with cheese or chocolate fondue – a great interactive party food.


Party affiliation

Whether you're inviting friends from both sides of the aisle or sticking with one political group for your night, everybody will enjoy a good laugh over some Republican elephant or Democrat donkey party foods.

Serve up some burritos – which in Spanish means "little donkey" – to represent the blue states, and a peanut-based snack mix for the red state elephants in the room, or go for some silly sweet treats: Elephant Ears and rum balls called "Donkey Droppings."
