A-State Men's Basketball holds annual Media Day event

From Arkansas State University

An early preview on the 2012-13 Arkansas State University men's basketball team was collected by media representatives this Thursday (Oct. 25) afternoon during the program's annual Media Day at the ASU Convocation Center in Jonesboro, Ark.

Both the broadcast and print media participated in a luncheon and press conference with A-State head coach John Brady and selected student-athletes to preview the upcoming 2012-13 season.

"We as coaches are excited about this season," Brady said during the press conference in the Convocation Center's Media Room. "I do believe we're a much better basketball team this season particularly with our depth due to a solid recruiting class. This team is not only healthy and the attitude is good, but there have been no distractions along the way and we keep moving forward."

The Red Wolves will be centered around a trio of seniors in guards Marcus Hooten and Trey Finn along with forward Brandon Peterson, who were all starters a season ago. Hooten led A-State in scoring last season with a 12.5 points per game average while Finn paced the Red Wolves with 61three-point goals made and averaged 11.6 points a contest. Peterson was ASU's top performer a season ago in both rebounding (7.9 rpg.) and blocked shots (33) to go with a 9.2 points per game scoring average. This 2012-13 preseason, Finn claimed first-team All-Sun Belt Conference recognition while Peterson garnered second-team laurels and Hooten was named to the conference's third team.

Those three will be joined by two juniors in guard Ed Townsel and forward Kendrick Washington, a University ofHouston transfer, among others. Townsel , who also was a starter in 2011-12, scored at a 9.0 points per game clip last season while Washington will make his ASU debut this season after sitting out the 2011-12 campaign due to NCAA rules.

"If you talk about this season's team, you have to start with Marcus Hooten, Brandon Peterson, and Trey Finn as those three all earned preseason conference honors," said Brady, who will begin his fifth year at ASU this season. "I don't mind saying it starts with

those three guys. I think they're mature enough and they understand what leadership is all about and I believe we have that in place. Those three coupled with Kendrick Washington and Ed Townsel in the mix gives us six character guys who really want to win.

A-State, which returns six letterwinners and five of its top six scorers from last season, will open the 2012-13 campaign on the road Saturday, Nov. 10 at Dayton followed by the home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 13 versus Arkansas-Monticello. Prior to the regular-season opening contest, the Red Wolves host Southern Arkansas on Thursday, Nov. 1 and Henderson State on Tuesday, Nov. 6 in two exhibition encounters at the Convocation Center. All three ASU home games are scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. (CT) start and tickets are available for purchase by calling 1-888-ASU-FANS.
