JONESBORO, Ark. (AStateRedWolves.com) – The 2012-13 edition of Lindy's Sports College Basketball Preview is now on newsstands and the Arkansas State University men's basketball team has received notoriety in the publication's Sun Belt Conference (SBC) section.
The Red Wolves, under fifth-year head coach John Brady, were predicted by Lindy's Sports to finish second among five teams in the Sun Belt Conference's West Division. The Lindy Sports' Sun Belt Conference preview, written by Brian Mull, lists Arkansas State as the runner-up to divisional favorite North Texas. In the six-team East Division, Middle Tennessee received the top team designation.
Senior Marcus Hooten was one of five individuals to earn Lindy's Sports preseason all-league second-team recognition. The 6-3, 208-pound guard led A-State in scoring a season ago with a 12.5 points per game average as a starter in 33 of 34 contests played in. The ASU tri-captain also averaged a team sixth-best 2.4 rebounds an outing while dishing out a squad second-most 55 assists to go with 19 steals. Hooten, who was recently named to the 2012-13 SBC Preseason All-Conference Third Team, compiled double-figure points totals on 20 occasions and eclipsed the 20-points mark four times a season ago.
His backcourt teammate, senior Trey Finn was listed in the honor roll section and rated as the conference's top shooter. Finn, a 6-2, 213-pound team tri-captain, averaged both a team third-best 11.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest for the 2011-12 campaign. A starter in 29 of 30 games played in, Finn produced a squad third-highest 54assists while racking up a team second-most 45 steals. The 2012-13 SBC Preseason All-Conference First-Team pick paced the Red Wolves in both three-point field goals made (61) and three-point field goal percentage (.459).
Both Hooten and Finn were chosen as 2012-13 honors candidates for Arkansas State by Lindy's Sports. Senior forward Brandon Peterson was labeled by the publication as A-State's player to keep an eye on this upcoming 2012-13 season. Peterson, a 2012-13 ASU tri-captain and a 2012-13 SBC Preseason All-Conference Second-Team honoree, was the Red Wolves' leading rebounder (7.9 avg.) and shot blocker (33 total) this past season as a starter in all 34 A-State games. The 6-8, 217-pound Peterson scored at a 9.2 points per game clip and led the team in free throws made with 101 total.
The publication selected North Texas' Tony Mitchell as the Sun Belt Conference's Preseason Player of the Year while Antoine Allen of South Alabama garnered Newcomer of the Year kudos.
The three A-State seniors along with their teammates will make their 2012-13 season debut this Thursday (Nov. 1) evening as the Red Wolves entertain Southern Arkansas in a 7:05 p.m. (CT) exhibition matchup at the ASU Convocation Center in Jonesboro.
