Sharp County goes 'wet'

ASH FLAT, AR (KAIT) – In a hotly debated and sometimes emotional ballot issue, Sharp County voters passed a Wet/Dry proposition to allow the legal sale and manufacture of alcoholic beverages in the county by a margin of 3,884 in favor compared to 3,456 against.

Proponents of the issue many times brought safety into the debate, citing citizens had to travel outside the county to buy alcohol, plus Sharp County was missing out on tax revenues.

Opponents had cited the negative effects that alcohol abuse has on many families and the additional law enforcement that may be needed to monitor alcohol-related businesses if it passed.
