Army To Activate 89 Arkansans under Ready Reserve for Service in Iraq

JULY 6, 2004 - Posted at 4:26 p.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - An Army spokesman said this morning that 89 members of Arkansas' Independent Ready Reserve will be called up for service in Iraq.  The Arkansas soldiers are part of the 5,600 that the military plans to involuntarily recall to active duty.

The state figure is up 14 from last week, when officials at the Army Human Resources office in St. Louis said 75 Arkansans would be called.  Army spokesman Ray Gall said today that soldiers are to be notified by Western Union telegrams from Washington, DC over the next few days.

Gall said that Army pooled the 111,000 ready reserve soldiers nationwide and pared the list down to members who had more than six months left to serve.

Gall said the list was narrowed again to soldiers who are skilled in needed areas like transportation and military police.
