Prescription Drugs and The Internet Could be a Dangerous Combination

JONESBORO--A dangerous trend in prescription drug use could be just one click away.

Several drugs are being bought over the Internet without a prescription which can lead to serious health problems.

For example, Acetaminophen found in Vicadin taken in excessive amounts can severely damage the liver.

"Without yearly checks with your doctor to determine how your liver function is , one would never know that they were damaging their liver until they were pretty close to death,"said Pharmacist Ken Gibson.

Pricey prescription drugs like Lipitor are a cholesterol lowering medication but come with a high price tag.

It is becoming surprisingly easy to buy drugs like this online but buyers beware.

"Medication that was not produced by the manufacturer, medication that was produced in somebody's kitchen that had designed the tablets mode to make them look like Lipitor. Actually, you were just getting something like baking powder that was crushed together,"said Gibson.

Another danger with online prescription purchasing is simply people avoiding their annual medical check up.

"The doctor is not in the loop, and pharmacist's assisting in health care.....yes it's affecting their health,"said Pharmacist Ken Gibson.

Ken Gibson says his biggest concern is that consumers think they are getting a break in prescription costs when buying on line, but the health problems that could result, may be more than consumers bargained for.
