Heifer International expands work to Bangladesh

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Little Rock-based Heifer International is expanding into the South Asia nation of Bangladesh.

The charity works to help the world's poor become self-sufficient through agriculture, such as by helping people learn to raise their own cattle. The organization announced Friday that it plans to open a country program office in Bangladesh.

Heifer's first project there will assist 4,000 families by working through women's groups to organize savings and credit programs. Such programs have a history of effectively increasing the incomes of people participating.

The project will also assist families with raising cattle and provide technical training.

Bangladesh is about the size of Iowa and has a population of 162 million, eighth largest in the world. Nearly half of its population lives on less than $1.25 per day.
