Arkansas State senior linebacker Nathan Herrold, the Red Wolves leading tackler with a career-best 89 stops this season, has been named a First Team Capital One Academic All-District VI football selection.
Herrold, a 2011 Second Team All-Sun Belt Conference choice, has started every game this season for the Red Wolves while also holding down a 3.69 cumulative GPA in Exercise Science. Herrold is also an ASU Athletic Director's Honor Roll and Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's List member.
The Ozark, Mo., native has recorded two interceptions, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, seven tackles for loss and one sack along with his team-high tackles total, which also ranks fourth in the Sun Belt Conference and tied for 50th in the nation.
Herrold recorded a career-high 17 tackles in a 36-29 victory over South Alabama earlier this season, giving him three games this year and six for his career with double-figure stops. He has also recorded at least a partial tackle for loss in eight of ASU's last nine games. He was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against USA.
With at least two games remaining, Herrold needs just 11 more tackles to become the first ASU player with 100 or more since Koby McKinnon recorded 101 stops in 2007. He has now tallied 274 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, 3.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions during his four-year career at Arkansas State.
The Red Wolves, 7-3 overall and 5-1 in Sun Belt action, claimed their fifth consecutive victory Thursday with a 45-23 win over ULM at Liberty Bank Stadium. They have two regular-season games remaining, including a Nov. 17 outing at Troy before their 2012 home finale against Middle Tennessee on Dec. 1.
