Jonesboro Officials Gearing Up for National Night Out '04

JULY 7, 2004 - Posted at 11:12 a.m. CDT

JONESBORO, AR - Organizers and volunteers for National Night Out activities in Jonesboro are once again hard at work, preparing for this year's annual anti-crime event.  Coordinators Judy Furr and Steve McDaniel told K8 News this morning that this year's event is set for August 3.

As usual, neighborhoods throughout the city are encouraged to join forces with thousands of communities across the nation for the 21st Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event, which will be observed in over 10,000 communities from all 50 states, Canada, and U.S. military bases around the world.

In Jonesboro, seven corporate sponsors will help fund and coordinate various sites throughout the city that will feature free food and entertainment, and activities for children and adults.  Organizers are also once again encouraging neighborhood block parties for the event.  Anyone wishing to sponsor or host a block party should contact McDaniel at the Jonesboro Police Department at 935-5562, or Furr at 933-8220.  The deadline to register is July 25.  There could be an added bonus for neighborhoods hosting block parties.  "The city is going to thoroughly spray for mosquitoes in those neighborhoods," said Furr.  "Lots of extra spraying."
