Masked thief steals church money box during dinner

Posted: Updated:

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Jonesboro police say a man walked into the First United Methodist Church, 801 S. Main, Wednesday and stole a money box containing approximately $300 in checks and cash.

The robbery happened just before 6 p.m. while the church was hosting its Wednesday night dinner.

Dixie Owens told police she was collecting money at the Union Street entrance when the man walked in, picked up the box and quickly walked out.

She described the thief as being a "very skinny" white male wearing a dark blue or black hoodie.  Owens said the man "had an undershirt pulled up over his face, just above his nose, or a surgical mask."

Witnesses reported seeing the man run toward the southwest after leaving the church.

Officers searched the area, but were unable to locate the suspect.

If you have any information that could help police identify the man, call CrimeStoppers at (870) 935-STOP.

Will Dupree will have more on this story tonight on Region 8 News at 5 and 6.
