WEST MONROE, LA (KSLA) -

The brothers of Duck Dynasty have become the most popular family on reality TV. Who could have predicted that excess facial hair would become a phenomenon for nearly four million viewers.

"Used to, we would just have the beards during hunting season," said Jase Robertson, one of the Robertson brothers and cast member of Duck Dynasty. "That was the tradition. We would shave after hunting season but now we are filming so we have it year round."

As CEO of the multi-million dollar Duck Commander company, Willie Robertson, said the beard is good for business because it makes the family more recognizable. That's true for all but one of the Robertson boys.

"You wonder what they look like under that beard, this is it," said Alan Robertson, pointing to his clean shaven face.

Alan is the oldest of the four Robertson boys. He likes to call himself the original. He spent the past 22 years as a pastor until recently when he decided to join the family business. He helps schedule appearances. Alan really never got into the whole beard thing.

"It's like a sasquatch in reverse. It's a sighting. But instead of a hairy sighting I'm the clean sighting. Everybody's like, I heard there's another one, a mystical creature."

The shows network, A&E, is reportedly leery about adding a brother who does not have a beard because it would take away from some of the mystery. It's been that way for most of the company projects in the past.

"We went to sell Duckman 9 and Alan didn't have a beard and they said you have to put one on him," said Missy Robertson, wife of Jase who is also part of the show. "So they photoshopped a beard on him."

Alan said it has been hard to deal with because he is considered the different one or the "black sheep".

"Only in my family would being normal be abnormal. My feeling is that once you go with the long hair and the beard there's no going back."
