At 25, SEMO walk-on has overcome major hurdles

Posted: Updated:

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - Brandon Beck takes the teasing in stride. Some of his teammates on the Southeast Missouri State University football team call him "Grandpa."

KFVS-TV (http://bit.ly/S09iaA ) reports that at 25, Beck is older than his teammates. He's also been through more than most.

Beck, of Jackson, Mo., was recruited out of high school to play at Lindenwood University. Instead, he joined the Army.

Just as a tour in Iraq was wrapping up, members of his unit noticed swelling in his neck. It was non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, diagnosed in 2009. After five months of chemotherapy the cancer is in remission.

Now out of the military, Beck walked onto the football team and is now a fullback. He scored his first collegiate touchdown earlier this season.
