JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)-The Newport Chamber of Commerce is beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
The Jackson County 4H is hosting the first annual "Festival of Trees" contest.
Family and Consumer Science 4H Agent for Jackson County, Sara Metzger, says they first came up with this idea in order to raise awareness about the 4H organization.
"We are trying to increase our membership in 4H," Metzger said. "I think this is a good way to do that, to get the 4H name out. 4H is a wonderful, nonprofit organization for youth ages 5 to 19. We have over 82 projects that children can be involved with throughout their 4H career"
Metzger says any youth organizations, non profit organizations, churches and businesses were invited to decorate a tree with their own special touch.
Metzger says they had a great turn out considering this is the first year for the contest.
"The hospital has participated," Metzger said. "Some of our 4H clubs, our extension homemakers, Linley Healthcare, Women's Democratic Committee, the Learning center and also a bank."
The categories participants could choose from to decorate their tree were most comical, best business, traditional and unique.
"Hopefully, this will get everyone in the holiday spirit," Metzger said. "I want them to get involved next year if they weren't involved this year and so, hopefully it gets them in the holiday spirit as a community."
There are currently ten trees sitting in the main lobby of the Chamber of Commerce.
Voting began November 26th with a kickoff reception at the Chamber of Commerce from 4 to 6.
The public is welcome to come in and cast their vote through December 18th.
