Lyon College set to host 31st annual high school basketball tournament

BATESVILLE, Ark. (LyonScots.com) – With December approaching, that means basketball is in the air. Some of the best high school basketball in this region of Arkansas will take place in Lyon College's James C. Becknell Gymnasium starting this Saturday as the 2012 Lyon College High School Basketball Tournament gets underway.

Thirty-one teams from 16 high schools will participate in the six-day single-elimination event, which has run annually since 1982 and includes 29 games this year. The boys and girls semifinals are set for Friday, Dec. 7, with the championship matchups being played on Saturday, Dec. 8.

Schools participating in the tournament include Calico Rock, Cave City, Cedar Ridge, Concord, Greer's Ferry, Harding Academy (boys only), Heber Springs, Highland, Mammoth Spring, Melbourne, Mountain View, Midland, Pocahontas, Salem, Southside and Viola.

Action will get underway this Saturday at 11 a.m., with eight games on the schedule. The four girls games include: Melbourne taking on Calico Rock at 11 a.m.; Heber Springs facing Highland at 1:30 p.m.; Cave City battling Greer's Ferry at 4 p.m.; and Salem squaring off with Mammoth Spring at 5:15 p.m. Boys action on Day 1 includes: Calico Rock and Melbourne playing at 12:15 p.m.; Cave City taking on Heber Springs at 2:45 p.m.; Harding Academy facing Mammoth Spring at 6:30 p.m.; and Mountain View squaring off against Salem at 7:45 p.m.

There will be five more first-round games on Monday, Dec. 3, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Three boys games are scheduled, along with two girls games.

After an off-day on Tuesday, Dec. 4, for a Lyon College men's basketball contest against Victory University at 7 p.m., high school action will resume on Wednesday, Dec. 5, with two first-round games and three quarterfinal contests, with the first game tipping off at 3:30 p.m.

Five more quarterfinal matchups will take place on Thursday, Dec. 6, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

The tournament semifinals for both the boys and girls will be played Friday, starting at 4:30 p.m. The girls' championship will be played on Saturday, Dec., 8, at 6 p.m., with the boys' championship set to get underway at 7:15 p.m.

There will be championship and runner-up team trophies for the first and second-place teams, along with the tournament Most Valuable Player and five other all-tournament awards in both the boys and girls divisions.

Admission prices to the tournament are $4 for adults and $3 for students 18 and under. Lyon College students will be admitted free. All Arkansas High School Athletic Association (AAA) passes will be accepted. There will be concessions available at the tournament.
