BATESVILLE, AR (LyonScots.com) - The Lyon College High School Invitational Basketball Tournament finished with a bang Monday night as five more teams advanced in the single-elimination Tournament. The Viola, Mountain View and Greers Ferry West Side boys teams all picked up wins, while the Cedar Ridge and Pocahontas girls squads won as well.
Here's a rundown of Monday's first-round action:
BOYS: VIOLA 57, SOUTHSIDE 37
Viola senior Austin Gardner led all scorers with 28 points to lead the Longhorns to a first-round victory over the Southside Southerners, 57-37, in a first-round boys game at the Lyon College tournament.
Quentin Houghtaling complemented Gardner's scoring output by chipping in 14 points, while Devin Brown added five, Chris Shaffer dropped in four and Jeff Smith and Brandyn Batterton each scored one point.
Stephen Norris paced the Southerners with 16 points, while Taylor Ellis chipped in six. Trey Sisk added four points for Southside, while Myles Hooper, Grant Long and Lucas Brandscum each scored three and Jake Henderson added two points.
The loss eliminated Southside, while Viola will advance to Thursday's quarterfinal game at 3:30 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday's first-round matchup between Cedar Ridge and Highland, which will be played at 4:45 p.m.
GIRLS: CEDAR RIDGE 50, CONCORD 25
A trio of Cedar Ridge players combined for 33 of the team's 50 points Monday evening as the Lady Timberwolves started fast and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the tourney with a 50-25 victory over the Concord Lady Pirates.
Freshman Liz Henderson paced Cedar Ridge with 13 points, while freshman Christine Mathis and junior Haley Hix each chipped in 10 points apiece in the win. Cassie Hendrix knocked down six points, Shannon Butler scored five and Cheyenne Brooks, Chaney Ryan and Tosha Lovell scored two each.
Kayla Richardson paced Concord with nine points, with Emanda Reeves added eight points, with Megan Talley throwing in six and Sydney Harlan scoring two.
Cedar Ridge will move on to play Mountain View on Wednesday in the quarterfinal round. Mountain View received a bye in the first round of action. The game will be played at 6 p.m.
BOYS: MOUNTAIN VIEW 67, SALEM 34
A balanced scoring attack enabled Mountain View to move on to the quarterfinals of the Lyon College tourney as 10 different players scored in a 67-34 victory over Salem on Monday night.
Junior Tanner Holt led the Yellow Jackets attack with 13 points, while Eli Gibson was just behind with 12. Jordan Wilcox chipped in nine points, while Tyler Luster and Ethan Farris each knocked down eight, Hunter Buchanan scored five, Nathan Bryant and Michael Cox each dumped in four, and Mikeel Whitaker and Derek Broyles scored two apiece.
The Greyhounds were led by J.J. Gray's 10 points. Justus Sparks chipped in seven points, Cody Faulkner scored five, Kyndal Smith was credited with three, Dalton Raines, Tristen Rogers, Blake Hensley and John Smith each scored two and Hunter Medling scored one point.
Mountain View will advance to play Calico Rock on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in the quarterfinal round of the tourney.
GIRLS: POCAHONTAS 62, VIOLA 54
Pocahontas put four players in double figures as the Lady Redskins held off a late Viola charge for a 62-54 first-round victory to eliminate the Lady Longhorns on Monday night.
Lady Redskin senior Hannah Lakey tied for the game-high scoring with 18 points, while teammate Laura Junkersfeld added 16, Courtney Baltz threw in 12 and Kylee Kirk added 11 points. Katie Martin finished the night with five for Pocahontas.
Junior Hannah Duvall paced Viola with 18 points, while Haylee Conners and Lakynn Brown each chipped in 10. Kiersten Moore threw in seven points, Tristan Burden added five and Karlee Dockins threw in three points.
Pocahontas to move to the quarterfinals on Thursday where the Lady Redskins will face Salem at 4:45 p.m. Salem defeated Mammoth Spring, 46-37, on Saturday.
BOYS: GREERS FERRY WEST SIDE 63, POCAHONTAS 61
The Greers Ferry West Side tandem of senior Logan Bailey and junior Ben Hargrove combined for 43 points Monday night as the Eagles held off a late rally by Pocahontas as the Eagles advanced to the quarterfinals and eliminated the Redskins with a 63-61 triumph.
Bailey pumped in 22 points for Greers Ferry, while Hargrove was right behind with 21, as they were the only two Eagles in double figures. Bryce Hipp added eight points, Tanner Galleazzi chipped in six andKeaton Sutterfield and Jacob Miller each scored three points.
Pocahontas was led by senior Jacob Futrell, who poured in 21 points, while Braden Allen and Jeff Robinson each contributed 11 points. P.K. Kirk added nine points, Clark Brewington added three and Jackson Coates and Zane Cannon both had two points.
After trailing much of the fourth quarter, the Redskins had a chance to tie the game late, but Kirk missed two free throws with 23.8 seconds left after he was fouled on a put-back attempt. Greers Ferry's Sutterfield was fouled and connected on 1-of-2 charity shots with 5.3 seconds remaining, to stretch the Eagles' lead to 63-61.
With one last change to win the contest or send it into overtime, Futrell put up a runner at the buzzer, but it hit the backboard and rimmed off.
The Eagles will advance to play Harding Academy Thursday at 6 p.m. in the quarterfinal round.
