Huckabee's Support of Heber Springs House Candidate Sparking Controversy in Little Rock

JULY 12, 2004 - Posted at 7:16 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A campaign contribution from Governor Huckabee to the challenger of House - speaker elect Bill Stovall is sparking controversy in Little Rock.

Huckabee gave $1,000 to Charles "Chee Chee" Tamburo, a Republican from Heber Springs.  Some of Stovall's allies say the Republican governor's actions show that Huckabee fails to grasp how the legislative process works.  Tamburo is only the fourth challenger in 30 years to a speaker-designate.

Other allies say they wonder what Huckabee is trying to prove because Stovall's opponent has "no chance."

Huckabee said his helping Tamburo wasn't significant because "people campaign for folks in their own party."  His PAC has given money to 19 other Republican legislative candidates.

Stovall said he would work dilligently with the governor if he's re-elected.
