FAYETTEVILLE (ArkansasRazorbacks.com) – Junior pitchers Barrett Astin and Colby Suggs, senior outfielder Matt Vinson and junior catcher Jake Wise have been selected as team captains for the 2013 Arkansas baseball team, as announced on Tuesday by head coach Dave Van Horn.
Astin led the Razorback pitching staff with 32 appearances during the 2012 season. The Forrest City, Ark., native finished his sophomore season with a 3-5 record, a team-leading 11 saves and a 1.99 ERA. Astin's 11 saves were the third-highest single-season total in school history, while his 32 appearances were the seventh-most in a season in school annals. Astin finished the season tied for third in the SEC in saves and tied for seventh in the conference in appearances. Through his first two seasons as a Razorback, Astin has pitched in 59 games, 53 out of the bullpen, and has an 8-7 record with 14 saves and a 2.36 ERA.
Suggs ranked second on the team with 30 appearances, all in relief, in 2012. A native of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Suggs compiled a 7-1 record with a 1.38 ERA in his sophomore season. Suggs held opposing hitters to a .203 batting average and struck out 36 batters in 39 innings. He finished tied for 10th in the SEC in wins and appearances. Suggs did not allow a run in 24 of his 30 outings last season and had streaks of eight and 11 consecutive appearances without allowing a run. Suggs has pitched in 42 games in his Razorback career and has a 9-2 record with a 1.22 ERA.
A native of Alma, Ark., Vinson played in 49 games, including 36 starts, and hit .217 with 13 RBI last season. The senior outfielder finished third on the team with 24 walks. Vinson saved some of his best performances for last season's College World Series as he started all four games and had four hits with three RBI. Vinson has appeared in 122 games, including 81 starts, over his first three seasons at Arkansas and is a .214 hitter with five homers and 36 RBI.
Wise played in 60 games and made 49 starts during the 2012 season. The Houston, Texas, native finished the season with a .244 batting average, two home runs and 25 RBI. Wise had a pair of key hits in the Razorbacks' postseason run in 2012. In game three of the Waco Super Regional, Wise drove in the eventual game-winning run with a 10th-inning single as Arkansas defeated No. 4 Baylor, 1-0, to advance to the College World Series. In the first game of the CWS against Kent State, Wise homered and drove in three runs to help Arkansas to a victory. Wise has played in 81 games, including 60 starts, in his collegiate career and has a .227 batting average with three home runs and 30 RBI.
Arkansas opens the 2013 season on Friday, Feb. 15, as it faces Western Illinois at Baum Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
