NEWARK, AR - An early-morning train derailment in Independence County has led to a lot of activity in Newark today.

Authorities say a southeasterly-bound Missouri & Northern Arkansas freight derailed after it apparently struck a freight car that was sitting idle on the tracks in Newark around 2 a.m. this morning.  Three engines and four to five freight cars were reportedly involved in the accident, in which no injuries were reported, although two people were reported taken to a Batesville hospital as a precautionary measure.

Rail company officials say they expect to have the wreck site cleaned up by tonight.  They also say the train was hauling "commodities," believed to be coal and grain.

K8 News has a crew at the scene and will have a full report tonight at six.
