JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)- The Veteran Of Foreign Wars in Jonesboro wants to bring hope to the homeless the holiday season. This week, the VFW is putting together care packages to take to the Salvation Arm next week to hand out to the homeless staying at the shelter. Region 8 News was there when the organization did this last year, but the year, the need has grown.
"Last year we had eleven homeless from the Salvation Army. This year there's already 20, and maybe more before Christmas," said Wilma Freeman.
Members of the VFW Lady's Auxiliary have taken up the job as Santa's helpers. They are not stuffing stockings, but bundles of hope to take to a group of people who need it the most.
"They don't have anywhere else to go. These are the kinds of people that are forgotten about at Christmas time," said Freeman.
Freeman says the organization has collected blankets, toothpaste, bags, anything you could consider as a basic necessity to distribute to the homeless staying at the Salvation Army. It was a service project the group decided to take on last year. It was such a moving experience, Freeman says they had to do it again.
"I remember the man that stood up and said, "these people do even know us, and here they've brought us things," you know, someone is tickled over a pair of socks or a razor. This one man said "hey I can shave now. I've got a razor." This makes it all worth wild," said Freeman.
But with need nearly doubled from last year, they could always use more.
"Deodorants, anything that you could think of that you would need to make your life feel more normal.," said Freeman.
If you don't have time to pick up items, Freeman says they also accept cash donations. The group plans to deliver the packages December 19th, next Wednesday. If you are interested in contributing, there's still time. You can drop off items at the Jonesboro VFW located at 300 Airport Road.
