From the Southeastern Conference
The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) released its 2012 All-America teams and the SEC had 15 student-athletes named First-Team, Second-Team, Third-Team and Honorable Mention while Florida's Živa Recek was named 2012 Division I AVCA Freshman of the Year.
Chloe Mann (Florida) received First-Team All-America honors while Whitney Billings (Kentucky) garnered Second-Team accolades. Lisa Henning (Missouri) received Third-Team honors for the second consecutive year. Roslandy Acosta (Arkansas), Taylor Brauneis (Florida), Christine Hartmann (Kentucky), Alisia Kastmo (Texas A&M), Stephanie Klefot (Kentucky), Lindsey Miller (Texas A&M), Ellen Mullins (Tennessee), Jasmine Norton (Arkansas), Živa Recek (Florida), Kelsey Robinson (Tennessee), Allie Sawatzky (Texas A&M) and Tangerine Wiggs (Florida) were all named Honorable Mention in 2012.
Mann, the reigning SEC Player of the Year, leads the Gators and the nation with a .444 hitting percentage. She helped lead Florida to a 27-5 overall record suffering just one conference loss en route to an appearance in the NCAA Sweet 16. Averaging 3.65 kills per set, Mann is second on the team with 380 kills and first with 120 total blocks. She garners AVCA All-American accolades for the first time.
Billings is the sixth Wildcat in program history to earn second-team accolades. It is the first such honor of her career after earning honorable mention distinction in her sophomore season. The Helena, Ala., native led the Wildcats with a career-best 365 kills on the year for an average of 2.99 per set. She also paced the squad with a career-high 35 aces. Billings ranked second on the team in digs (2.75 per set) and blocks (0.79 per set).
Henning receives Third-Team honors after being selected to the All-SEC first team and the AVCA All-South Region Team earlier this year. She led the conference in kills per set (4.64) and points per set (5.28) a year after leading the Big 12 in kills per set and points per set. Henning's numbers were even better in SEC play as she averaged 4.75 kills per set and 5.34 points per set.
Recek, the 2012 SEC Freshman of the Year, paced Florida with 440 kills (4.00/set) and ranked top five in the SEC in kills and points per set (4.45). She was a four-time SEC Freshman of the Week selection, two-time SEC Offensive Player of the Week honoree and now owns the Florida freshman record for kills in a season, shattering the previous record of 357 shared by Aycan Gokberk and Marcie Hampton.
The awards will be presented Dec. 14, 2012 in Louisville, Ky. at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet. The event is held in conjunction with the 2012 AVCA Convention.
