Tips for sleeping better during the holidays

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - When we think of the holidays, good food and fellowship come to mind.

In fact, subtle pressure builds as friends and family fill up dining rooms and kitchens across Region 8.

The hustle and bustle of a chaotic holiday season is believed to affect sleeping patterns, which harm mood and health.

Even in the shopping malls, late December is a stressful time for retailers and consumers alike.

In fact, people tend to lose that quality sleep looking for that perfect last-minute Christmas gift.

One Region 8 shopper knows how hectic the season can get.

"My mom and dad, and brothers and sisters. We'll be going to his family's house, his daughter and son. So it's going to be a busy, busy day."

Trumann resident Cathy Brown fought through traffic and even the crowd this morning to finish up some holiday shopping.

She's avoiding that worrisome last-minute shopping spree.

"Today I've just been out shopping with my oldest son. He's picking out some gifts for his girlfriend. It is very busy out here today. We've been out here since 9:30 this morning."

Brown is planning to hit the road over the holidays.

If you're getting behind the wheel, make sure to dress comfortably and stop along the way to stretch.

For the couch potatoes, a short 30-minute afternoon nap will reduce fatigue without affecting nighttime sleep.

Watch what you eat.

Over-eating can cause indigestion while caffeine will make it difficult to fall asleep.

Lastly, take a deep breath and stretch before going to bed.

"Once you get all your family together and you've done all your visitations, just go home and relax."
