Gay Marriage Issue Won't Disappear; Arkansas Senators Side With Majority

JULY 14, 2004 - Posted at 4:12 p.m. CDT

CAPITOL HILL - Arkansas Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor both sided with the majority today when the Senate voted to end debate on a measure banning gay marriage.

The vote was 50 to 48, ten short of the sixty needed to keep the measure alive.  Pryor and Lincoln, both Democrats, say marriage amendments should be up to the states.

In Arkansas, supporters of a state amendment have gathered signatures in anticipation of placing the issue on the November second ballot.
