Arkansas Game and Fish Cracking Down On Illegal Trash Dumping

July 14, 2004--Posted at 5:00 p.m. CDT

JONESBORO --Corporal Keith Rook is with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

He says there is an increasing problem with people illegally dumping trash on private and public property around Region 8.

Basically this is an illegal dumpsite.

Tires, cans, and even an old washing machine, and it's causing an unsightly mess.

"People come down here and they have some extra trash, shingles.  They come down here throw it out and leave,"said Rook.

It's a problem the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is working to put an end to .

"A lot of times they'll do it at night where they can't be seen,"said Rook.

Authorities are watching.

Certain sights are under surveillance leading to tickets being written and arrests being made.

It's not a pretty job, but officials do go through the trash, and usually find pieces of information leading them to who, or where the trash came from.

"We will find some snip it of evidence, and we will go from that. It' labor intensive, it's not the most fun thing to do....but it's paying off. We're catching a lot of the bad guys,"said Rook.

Rook says besides being an eyesore, and devastating to our environment, this problem could potentially be hazardous to your health.

"There's a waterway right here, down that way, and who knows in the end where that water ends up,"said Rook.

While you may not see officials at the dump sites be aware their watching, and you better abide by the rules....

".....and if you get caught you are going to receive a citation,"said Rook.
