JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Road and utility crews are preparing for the winter storm expected to roll through Region 8 on Christmas.
Monty Williams with Craighead Electric Cooperative said utility crews always have an outage restoration plan ready for inclement weather. The 80 linemen are just waiting to find out how hard the storm will hit.
"We're prepared 24 hours a day, seven days a week," Williams said. "If we have a large, bad storm kind of like what we did in 2009, we've got access to other materials and other workers."
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watches and warnings for several counties in Northeast Arkansas and Southeast Missouri effective Christmas day in the afternoon hours and extends overnight. The watch includes three to nine inches of snow, and 25 miles per hour winds with 35 miles per hour wind gusts.
"Trees going down or even poles breaking from just the wind hitting the power lines and causing them to snap and break."
Due to the high winds and several inches of snow the NWS predicts will more than likely cause hazardous driving conditions, road crews with the Arkansas State Transportation and Highway Department tested street equipment and prepared salt trucks for the roads.
