ASU Women’s Soccer Team Honored by NSCAA

JONESBORO, Ark. (ASU) – The Arkansas State women's soccer team has earned a team academic award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for its outstanding performance in the classroom during the 2011-12 academic year.

For a team to be considered for the NSCAA team academic award, it must have a composite team grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for all team members who appear on the roster.

Of the 512 teams recognized by the NSCAA, the Red Wolves ranked 11th among all schools and seventh in Division I with a team GPA of 3.59. Grace College posted the highest team GPA with a 3.71.

"We are beyond proud of the academic achievement of this team," ASU head soccer coach Tafadzwa Ziyenege said. "Academics are extremely important to us as a staff and we hold the players to high standards in the classroom in addition to what we do on the field.  To be one of the top ten academically in the nation shows the hard work our players put in representing our school on and off the field as true student-athletes. We congratulate the students and want to thank our academic advisor Brandon Gorman who has mentored our players to recognize how important academics are to their college experience."

Arkansas State was one of six Sun Belt Conference schools to earn the honor, leading Western Kentucky (3.57 GPA), South Alabama (3.48 GPA), Middle Tennessee (3.46 GPA), Arkansas-Little Rock (3.26 GPA), Florida Atlantic (3.22 GPA) and Troy (3.21 GPA).

On the field, ASU completed one of the best seasons in school history. The squad broke the school record for goals in a single season with 41 and averaged 2.05 goals per match, the highest mark in school history. The Red Wolves also set a record with seven home victories on the year.
