26 Cats Taken From Jonesboro Man

JULY 16, 2004 -- Posted at: 10:30pm CDT

JONESBORO, AR - Two years after first being suspected of animal neglect, a Jonesboro man is summoned to appear in court. Police and members of an animal welfare group rescued 26 cats and kittens in a surprise raid.

George Jordan, who owns the cats with his wife, said, "It's my fault the cats are in the shape they're in."

The Jordans became pet owners when they purchased one persian cat. Four years and 26 felines later those pets are living in a shed. Their cages are stacked on top of each other.

Wannda Turner, the director of Northeast Arkansans for Animals, explained, "On a scale of 1-10, 10 being worst, this is an 8."

Jordan told us he takes care of the animals, and he doesn't think anyone has the right to remove these cats. They were taken to a facility to be evaluated, their conditions were writen down and their temperatures were taken. Doctor Jack Jones said most have fecal balls in their fur, are infested with fleas and have ear mites.

"I'm sure he was doing the best that he could," explained Dr. Jones.

The cats were shaved. Matted fur, fleas and maggots were collected. It will all be used as evidence in court. George Jordan said his cats sell for $50 to $1,500, and someone purchased one as recently as a few days ago. After the seizure of his 26 cat, he's not sure if he'll return to the breeding business.

"I don't know," he admitted. "I can't tell you that, and I wouldn't tell you really. I wouldn't. WHY IS THAT? Well, because of the way everything's turned out. I mean it would be a very big secret if I do that."
