The Sun Belt Conference (SBC) has bestowed weekly honors on two Arkansas State University track athletes as Sharika Nelvis earned Women's Indoor Track of the Week accolades while Joey Meyer has been tabbed as the recipient of Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week Award as announced this Wednesday (Jan. 9) by the conference office.
Meyer, a junior, clocked a first-place 48.00 time in the
400-meter dash at the season-opening 2012 ASU Kickoff Klassic (Dec. 2) in
Jonesboro, Ark. Meyer was also part of the Red Wolves' 4x400 relay team, which
placed second as aresult of a 3.23.19 time.
Nelvis, a 2012 USTFCCCA
All-America Second-Team selection, set an ASU indoor record in the 55-meter dash
with a first-place time of 6.86 at the 2012 ASU Kickoff Klassic.
The performance surpassed her previous best 6.89 time set at the 2011 ASU Kickoff Klassic (Dec. 2) and also shattered the meet record of 6.87 held by Tulane's Gloria Asumnu in 2007.
The A-State junior also established an ASU Kickoff Klassic mark in the 55-meter hurdle event as she registered a 7.80 time to snap the record originally created by Teneeshia Jones of Mississippi in 1999.
The
Red Wolves, under second-year head coach Jim Patchell, will participate in the
Eastern Illinois (EIU) John Craft Invitational next Saturday, Jan. 19, in
