Drive for Life!

Today the whole Region 8 News team is participating in the Drive for Life. There is no man-made substitute, and every two second someone in the United States needs blood.  While I cannot donate blood until a couple months after I deliver this baby, I encourage you to join us in Jonesboro at the St Bernards Auditorium, roll up your sleeve, and donate.

We will bring you stories from local people directly impacted by the need and receipt of these blood donations. After the holidays, the blood supply is really depleted, and factor in that only 38% of the population is eligible to give blood, we need all the veins we can get! In fact, only 8% of those eligible actually donate. That is such a small percentage!

I think one of the most frightening experiences as a new mother I've ever heard comes from Amanda Rouse, who just 7 days after giving birth, had to sit in a waiting room while her newborn had open heart surgery. Lawson, at 7 days old, relied on blood donors to save his life. His tiny little body went through more than 5 pints of blood during surgery, and some through complications. This will be the second year I've had the pleasure of talking to Amanda and Lawson, and I always get a little choked up hearing their story. Someone took an hour of their day 5 years ago, and that hour has allowed this mother and son 5 years together.

For those of you able to donate today and this weekend, we welcome you and thank you profusely. The need for blood is always dire, and you never know when you may be on the other side of that needle, in need.
