Kick the sickness by eating power foods


The first line of defense against the flu may be at your local grocery store.

There are foods you can eat that power your body to fight infection.

Many of these power foods are found right on the shelf.

Dietitian Starr Wilson says foods that are loaded with nutrients are even better when you're feeling under the weather.

"Super foods are your fruits and vegetables. These contain immune-boosting antioxidants that fight off the free radicals that develop in your body. Those are the foods that are going to make you feel better, and whether you feel it or not, your body will thank you for eating those."

These vitamins and anti-oxidants repair and protect the tiny cells in your body and are found at the produce counter.

"Vitamins aren't the only antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables. There's also zinc or selenium which is found in brazil nuts."

Wilson says the best thing you could eat is yogurt.

It's loaded with vitamins and even the good kind of bacteria.

"Yogurt has been shown to have immune-boosting benefits. It can also reduce allergy symptoms and lower the incidence of upper respiratory infections."

Also, throw some fresh fish into the shopping cart.

Omega 3 and Selenium can make breathing easier as well as clear the body of the flu.

Chicken noodle soup may not cure the common cold, but the old wives' tale may hold some truth.

The nutrients in the broth can ease congestion and act as an anti-inflammatory.

"It can help when you're trying to fight a cold or flu. This amino acid, cysteine, which is released, has been proven to have the same effect as a bronchitis drug that you might be prescribed."
