LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - An Arkansas lawmaker has proposed banning most abortion coverage offered by Arkansas insurers under part of the federal health overhaul. Unlike a proposal tabled two years ago, it includes exemptions for rape and incest.
Democratic Rep. Butch Wilkins of Bono on Tuesday filed a bill that would place strict limits on when abortion would be covered in new insurance exchanges set up under the federal law. The measure would allow coverage for abortions in cases of rape, incest and when the life of the mother is at stake.
The Senate passed similar legislation in 2011, but the measure did not include rape or incest exemptions. The measure was tabled by a House panel.
Coverage for abortions could be obtained through separate supplemental policies.
