ASU basketball coaching staff to participate in Coaches vs. Cancer suits and sneakers

Posted:

JONESBORO, Ark. (AStateRedWolves.com) – Arkansas State University men's basketball head coach John Brady and members of his coaching staff will be participating in the National Basketball Coaches Association's (NABC) Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneaker Awareness Weekend program this weekend (Jan. 25-27) on a national scale.

The A-State men's basketball staff and other participating staffs throughout the nation will wear sneakers instead of dress shoes with their usual game attire during each school's respective game this weekend to show support for the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the fight against cancer.  The ASU coaches will be wearing sneakers at this Saturday's Sun Belt Conference game against Florida Atlantic. Opening tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. (CT) at the ASU Convocation Center in Jonesboro, Ark.

By wearing sneakers with their suits, participating coaches such as ASU's head coach John Brady and his staff are drawing attention to the fact that cancer remains a major health concern.

"The fight against cancer is very important to us all," said Brady.  "There's probably not one person in our country today who doesn't know someone who hasn't been affected by this dreaded disease.  We certainly hope to create greater awareness and create a major impact toward building a cancer-free society one day."

Since 1993, high school and college coaches across the country have raised nearly $85 million to support the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer.  Coaches vs. Cancer benefits the American Cancer Society's efforts in research, advocacy, education and patient services.  The program leverages the strength and celebrity of the nation's basketball coaches to reduce cancer risk through education programs and to raise funds for the ACS.

A-State fans are encouraged to become a part of the fight against cancer by partnering with Coaches vs. Cancer.  Red Wolves' fans can join in the fight against cancer with a donation of $5 by texting "COACH" to 20222.  For every text message received from January 24 through April 9, fans will be entered for an opportunity to win exclusive basketball experiences like watching top teams courtside at the 2013 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic or receiving autographed gear.
A basketball autographed by A-State head coach John Brady will be raffled off at this Saturday's game to an individual who has made a $5 donation to the ACS.

Coaches vs. Cancer leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of basketball coaches nationwide to increase cancerawareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs.  This program provides critical mission outreach, while raising funds in support of the Society's lifesaving efforts to help people stay well and get well, fund groundbreaking research into cancer's causes and cures, and fight back through legislativeaction and the local, state, and national levels.

College basketball coaches spend hours planning and preparing for their opponents. Each year members of the NABC also spend tireless hours to prepare a game plan off the court in the fight against cancer through their involvement with the Coaches vs. Cancer program.  Together, we can save lives.
