POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -
A Poplar Bluff police officer rescued two people from a fire that destroyed an apartment complex at 708 Cynthia Street in Poplar Bluff.
Captain Trout with city police says, officer Jeff Hovis observed smoke in the area and after locating the source of the smoke, Hovis attempted to wake the people living in the apartment complex by banging on their door.
Hovis was able to wake the people in the apartment and rescued a mother and her son from the fire.
Officials say had Hovis not been able to wake the people, the fire would have been fatal.
The complex was two stories with one unit on each floor. The top unit was vacant at the time of the fire.
The state fire marshal is currently on-scene investigating the cause.
Officer Danny Hicks with Poplar Bluff police says the apartment complex is a total loss.
