ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

One day after a child was shot, attendance is down at Price Middle School.

Telvis Douglas, 14, was shot at about 1:50 p.m. Thursday outside the school located on Benjamin Weldon Bickers Drive.

Douglas was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and was released later that night. School officials confirmed that he was shot in the back of the neck and received a soft tissue injury.

Atlanta Public Schools has 15 crisis team members and additional counselors assigned to Price Middle School following the shooting.

State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge released the following statement:

"We continue to keep the community at Price Middle School in our thoughts and prayers as they begin healing from yesterday's shooting. The incident shows that a trained school resource officer can help save lives and diffuse a violent situation. We must do everything we can to protect our students. Schools remain some of the safest places in the country and in Georgia, and SROs help make them even safer. It is my desire to find partnerships to ensure there are trained SROs in every school in the state."

Superintendent Erroll Davis said he wants full-time resource officers at all schools, and says they were just lucky shooting happened when an officer was there.

Davis said the school has two metal detectors, but is unclear if they were in working order.

"Like all devices, sometimes they are working and sometimes they are not and we have to keep maintaining them. So I can't tell you if one or both of them were working at the time," said Davis. "It's not clear if the gun even went through the metal detector."

Police are still investigating how gun got on campus.

Area police chiefs are planning to meet at the State Capitol Friday afternoon to discuss gun violence.
