
HOUSTON, Texas (AStateRedWolves.com) — The Arkansas State men's golf team began its 2013 spring schedule Monday, shooting a combined 604 at the Westwood Golf Club to finish the Rice Intercollegiate's opening two rounds tied for 11th place among 14 teams.
Led by senior Wessel Zwiegers' first-round 73, the Red Wolves completed the opening 18 holes with a 303 to place them tied for 11th. Freshman Seth Garner shot a team and personal season-best 73 for the next 18 holes as A-State cut two strokes off its first-round score, but was unable to move up in the standings.
Garner carded a 76 for the first round and completed the initial 36 holes with a combined 149, ending the day tied for 38th place to lead the Red Wolves. Zwiegers and fellow senior Matt Howton both shot a 151 and are tied for 44th place. Zwiegers followed up his 73 with a 78, while Howton posted a 76 and 75 for the first and second rounds, respectively.
A-State Chance Holden, a junior, is tied for 60th place after posting a 154 (79-75) and is followed by junior Easton key in 77th place with a 162 (78-84).
The Red Wolves are tied with Texas-Pan American and trail 10th-place Louisiana-Monroe by only one stroke and ninth-place McNeese State by just five. Florida Atlantic leads the field with a 572, while UTSA is second with a 577 and host-school Rice is third with a 580.
The Rice Intercollegiate's third and final round will be played Tuesday.
