ASU Men's Golf completes play at Rice Intercollegiate

Competing in its first spring tournament of the 2012-13 season, the Arkansas State men's golf team shot a final-round 313 Tuesday at the Westwood Golf Club as it dropped from tied for 11th place to 14th in the Rice Intercollegiate's final standings.

The Red Wolves finished both the first and second rounds tied for 11th place yesterday after posting 303 and 301 for each round, respectively.  A-State's Matt Howton posted a team-best 75 for the final 18 holes and completed the two-day tournament tied for 44th place to lead the Red Wolves.  The senior shot a 76 to begin play and carded a 75 in Monday's second round, recording a combined 226.

Following Howton, freshman Seth Garner and senior Wessel Zwiegers tied for 52nd place with a total 229.  Garner entered today's play tied for 38th place, but fell in the standings after recording an 80 for the final 18 holes.  Zwiegers posted a first-round 73 before scoring a 75 in each of the final two rounds.

Garner ranked a team-best seventh among all players in par-3 scoring, while Zwiegers made a team-high 36 pars that ranked tied for eighth out of the entire field.

Also competing for A-State, junior Chance Holden finished tied for 65th place with a 234 and junior Easton Key came in 77th with a 242.

Texas-San Antonio led the 14-team field with an 862, while Florida Atlantic finished runner-up with an 871.  Stephen F. Austin and host-school Rice both posted a combined 876 to finish tied for third place.

The Red Wolves return to action Feb. 18-19 at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of South Alabama.
