Swimming vs. running: Which is better for you?

While both swimming and running offer great health benefits to the human body, there are some who disagree about which is better for you in the long run.

"You don't' get joint pain, you're not pounding, your muscles aren't getting damaged," said Gary Green. We found Gary in the pool at the YMCA, along with several others who say swimming doesn't risk the same injuries you can get with running.

Green is a triathelete and has suffered numerous injuries while running, but not one ever happened in the pool. He's 46 and says he's been swimming since he was 5.

Swimmers can still get hurt, but that usually doesn't happen unless they overdo it.

Many say swimming is one of the only exercises you can do from the moment you're born until old age. The swimming coach at the Y says many recreational swimmers there are well into their 80's.
