(WMC-TV) -The Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County is treating a stray, Labrador mix dog who has a sexually transmitted disease.

Two concerned citizens fed Edra after they found her on the side of Airways Boulevard weeks ago. They gain her trust, and then brought her to the humane society.

And now, Edra is recovering nicely from a near death experience.

"It's lucky that we found her when we did, because a little while longer she may not have survived this," said HSMSC executive director Alexis Amorose.

Veterinarians diagnosed her with a rare transmissible venereal tumor.

"That is the equivalent of an STD, a sexually transmitted disease in people," said Amorose.

It happens when animals who are not spayed or neutered have sex.

"It can be fatal for the animals," said Amorose.

Amorose said it's the first such case the humane society has had in recent memory.

She said strays that get it normally die before diagnosis or treatment.

"This is another side effect of the animal overpopulation problem that people don't think about," said Amorose.

Amorose said Edra is practically a poster dog for the humane society's new STOP campaign, which is aimed at convincing Memphis and Shelby County to spay and neuter its pets.

The HSMSC is also raising money for a mobile spay and neuter unit to offer those services to those who can't afford them.
