Scammers selling used smartphones

If you like to buy smartphones online, you'll want to beware of the many scams out there.

One of them involves someone selling their phone for $300 to $500 and waiting a few days before reporting it stolen.

The seller then uses their insurance to get a replacement phone, and you get left with a useless paperweight.

When a carrier blocks the device and SIM card, you can't use the phone.

So if you decide to buy a phone online, make sure you call the carrier to see if you can have it activated.

You may want to ask the seller to meet you at the authorized retailer - that way you can have it checked out in the store before you buy it.

If you believe that you have been a victim of this scam, report the situation to the cell phone carrier, the Federal Trade Commission, and the website you used to purchase the phone.
