ST. LOUIS, Mo. (LyonScots.com) – Lyon College senior guard Debbie Onukwube received her second American Midwest Conference women's basketball weekly honor on Monday when she was named the AMC Player of the Week for games played during the week of Feb. 3-10.
Onukwube, 5-8 guard from Little Rock, Ark. helped the No. 20-ranked Scots to a perfect 2-0 finish as they stayed within one game of conference-leading and 17th-ranked Columbia College by defeating Park University, 63-54, on the road and No. 23-ranked William Woods University, 77-70, at home in overtime.
Lyon, which has now won 13 of its past 14 games and six straight, improved its season record to 22-3, which marked a new all-time single-season win record. The victory bettered the Scots' mark off 21-8 set by head coach Randy Gatling and the Scots in the 1991-92 season.
Onukwube, who was also the AMC Player of the Week during the first week of the season on No. 12, helped the Scots stay in the running for the top seed in the upcoming AMC Postseason Tournament and strengthen its hold on the No. 2 seed as she averaged 20.5 points, while chipping in nine rebounds, four assists two blocks and a steal.
In the win over Park University on Thursday, Onukwube hit 9-of-15 field goals, scoring 21 points, while adding two rebounds, a pair of assists, one block and a steal. Then, in the thrilling overtime home win over William Woods on Saturday, she converted 8-of-15 shots from the field, scoring 20 points, while pulling down seven boards, picking up a pair of assists and a blocked shot.
The 5-8 Mount Saint Mary's High School product finished the week hitting 56.7% (17-of-30) from the field and 87.5% (7-of-8) from the free throw line.
Lyon College will return to the floor Tuesday night when the Scots host Missouri Baptist University at 5:30 p.m. in James C. Becknell Gymnasium.
