From Arkansas State University
Junior Sharika Nelvis of the Arkansas State University women's indoor track and field team has been tabbed this week's (Feb. 13) Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week per release this Wednesday (Feb. 13) by the league office.
The weekly conference honor represents the third time this
indoor season in which the sprinter has received such recognition. A native of
Memphis, Tenn., Nelvis earned league plaudits for week one (Jan. 9) and week
four (Jan. 30).
Nelvis, a 2012 U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches
Association (USTFCCCA) Second-Team All-America selection, placed first in both
the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles events at last weekend's (Feb. 8-9)
Hoosier Hills Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. She clocked a 7.42 time in the
60-meter dash to lead all sprinters and posted a time of 8.34 in the 60-meter
hurdles en route to a first-place showing.
Nelvis has not only compiled the
Sun Belt Conference's best times in the two events (60-meter dash and 60-meter
hurdles), but also owns the top 200-meter dash time. Nationally, Nelvis
presently ranks tied for 17th place in the 60-meter hurdles and is listed 27th
in the 60-meter dash among this season USTFCCCA NCAA Division I rankings as of
Feb. 11.
To date for her career, Nelvis has now garnered SBC weekly laurels
on seven occasions. She was a four-time recipient last season, twice in the
indoor season(Feb. 8 and 15) and two times in the outdoor campaign (April 19 and
25).
With her selection, an ASU track student-athlete has now been a
recipient of a weekly Sun Belt Conference Award six times.
The Red Wolves
are idle this weekend in preparation of hosting the 2013 Sun Belt Conference
Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 24-25 at the ASU
Convocation Center in Jonesboro, Ark.
