Environmentalists Protest Cheney Visit to Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, AR - Environmentalists gave Vice President Dick Cheney a 21-chain saw salute today in Fayetteville.

The salute was intended to protest a Bush administration plan to roll back the Roadless Area Conservation Rule.  The 2001 rule limits construction in national forests.

Cheney is expected to campaign in Hot Springs and Fort Smith tomorrow.

The Sierra Club and Public Interest Research Group organized the protest today.  The groups have set out to collect comments from a million Americans opposing the Bush administration's plan.

Tracy Powers, an Ozark National Forest spokeswoman, said the 95,000 acres of national forests in Arkansas will not be affected by Bush's plans.  Powers said most of the roadless acres are in twelve Western states.
